Population. According to the census of 1989, Ukrainians form a slight majority (51.9 percent) of the oblast's population, followed by Russians (44.8). The rest of the population consists mostly of Belarusians, Tatars, and Jews. The population density is 107 people per sq km and is highest in the southern parts of the oblast. After Do-netske oblast, it is the most urbanized oblast in Ukraine: 86 percent of its population is urban. The largest cities are Luhansk, Komunarsk, Krasnyi Luch, Stakhanov, and Lysychansk.
