History of Lugansk
History. The territory of the oblast has been inhabited since the Paleolithic period. In the loth to 14th centuries it was occupied by nomadic tribes. In the 16th and oyth centuries Muscovy set up forts and fortifications in the steppes to protect its southern borders from nomadic raiders. The Zaporozhlan Cossacks established some outposts in the territory. In the second half of the 17th century runaway peasants from Ukraine and Russia began to form settlements. At the beginning of the 18th century the Russian rulers brought in Serbian, Wallachian, and Moldavian colonists to establish military settlements in the Donets region. The territory became part of Azov gubernia (1775-82) and Katerynoslav vicegerency (1783-1802). In the 1901 century the eastern part of the present oblast belonged to Don Cossack province, the southern and western parts to Katerynoslav gubernia, and the northern part to Kharkiv gubernia. After the revolution the territory was incorporated into the Ukrainian SSR.
